Walking With Dinosaurs: Proclaiming Truth
Written by: Joshua Joscelyn
What’s going on at your civic center, tonight? Don’t know? You might be surprised. Every year, millions of hours of evolutionary propaganda are pumped into communities all over America. The Discovery Channel, National Geographic, and Nova are just a few of the groups assaulting the truths of creation and the Bible. Some of the brightest minds, the most prolific writers, and the biggest budgets are involved in weaving tales of deception—deception that reigns free on television, in movies, at civic centers, and yes, even in your very own town. So here’s the question. What are you going to do about it?
Every weekday, kids K-12 are subjected to the same mantra, "Millions and millions of years ago…" But as if this weren’t enough to rob from God these precious, little minds, then there’s Walking With Dinosaurs. Walking With Dinosaurs is a multi-million dollar show sponsored in part by the British Broadcasting Corporation. Featuring unprecedented animatronic dinosaurs of massive sizes, stunning arenas of vibrant colors, and powerful scores of endearing music, this show is travelling the Western world from city to city, capturing the fascinated minds and hearts of children all over the planet. So I went to see it.
I was able to attend this show when it arrived in my hometown of Pensacola. I was both disturbed and impressed by the magic and warmth of the presentation. As a staunch creationist, I, myself, almost felt a desire to believe their lies, simply because of their beauty and elegance. The narrator continually emphasized the millions of years involved in evolution and the glory of death and struggle as each brilliantly-colored scene of life-sized dinosaurs climaxed with a fight and the passing of millions years of time in the story. Themes of death, destruction, and endless time meshed with the brilliant light displays, as epic and enchanting music swelled and ebbed, captivating the minds—and hearts—of so many children who will one day forget the few hours they spent in church and forever turn their back on the Bible in exchange for a lie. They have been taught to glorify the creature more than the Creator. Their love affair with the deadly fantasy of anti-Biblical evolution has begun at such a young and impressionable age. Overcoming this propaganda seems so overwhelming and futile. What can the Church possibly do to combat such an intricate and elegant web of lies? And this leads us back to the original question: what are you doing about this?
Here’s the thing. Christ commanded us—stop right there—commanded us to evangelize. Think about that. In Matthew 5:13, Jesus says, "Ye are the salt of the earth." That means it’s up to us to flavor this world with the salt of God’s truth—creation, the gospel, the truth about dinosaurs and the age of the earth even! But He goes on to say "if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted?" As Christians, you may be wondering how in the world we can take on such a monumental task as countering the elaborate system of lies Satan has established. But if we had not lost our savor to begin with, perhaps we wouldn’t have such an out-of-control problem! It’s time to retrieve lost ground in this battle; it’s time to go on the offensive! Let’s win back the time we have lost, as Ephesians 5:16 says: "Redeeming the time, because the days are evil." And we can do this, "because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world" (I John 4:4). So will you?
After the Walking With Dinosaurs event ended, I walked out to meet the volunteers who had come to join me in this endeavor; we grabbed a stack of DVDs of the T.R.U.T.H About the Dinosaurs and passed out over 1,000 within twenty minutes. They flew out of my hands! Now let’s think about this. Did every DVD I passed out change the mind of every child who watched it? Of course not. But one thing is for sure: they watched an entertaining presentation of truth that will make them think—and thinking, they will have a much better chance of seeing through the lies they are bombarded with. And that’s what being salt is all about. Make sure lies are countered at every turn; give them the truth when all they get are lies. So please, check your local civic center. Go out and see what’s going on at the park. Maybe there is a museum in town or a carnival coming soon. Wherever you are, grab some tracts, grab some DVDs, or just grab your Bible, and then go out and do something! There are opportunities for evangelism everywhere! Yes, the lies seem so much louder than truth in this society, but it’s time for Christians to go on the offensive and just yell a little louder. This Walking With Dinosaurs event was only one opportunity, and maybe you don’t have many big events in your town. But every passing stranger is an opportunity, and God has already commanded you to combat the lies. So regardless of the venue and regardless of size of the task, be salty—go out and evangelize!
